Citadel High vs. Citadel Hill - Urban Design

I've had two different people point out to me recently how much the new high school blocks the view of Citadel Hill as one drives from the Willowtree.

So I walked down Bell Road towards it - wow, they are right. Just about when you reach the CBC building, the famous landmark isn't a landmark anymore.

Although you can see it clearly from the far end of the Common by Cunard and Robie.

It really is a shame the school could not have been put on the old St. Patrick's site.

But it would never have made it on the QE site. I have seen plans already for a new emergency services extension from the Infirmary extending right over on to the Queen Elizabeth site - just like relatives waiting for the old girl to die, making plans with what to do with the estate.

In the words of the Brewnoser blogger himself, "well, duh."

It is hard to find a bigger blot on the Halifax landscape, although the apartment block on Cowie Hill does come to mind.

An urban school could have been put on the St. Pat's site, and it should have been put there, giving something to the street instead of taking something from the city.

Yes. And considering the entire block that now houses St. Pat's would have almost certainly allowed a proper intersection of Windsor and Quinpool to be created. One that allows left turns. This solves the Allan Street shortcutting problem (a faster way to get to the same place) and keeps tourists from going round in circles on the Common.

This was not allowed to happen, for comparatively petty reasons, by the same Board as recently dismissed by the Minister. About a year late, it now seems.

But we now have the Citadel Blob, and have got to learn to live with it. Unfortunately, it looks as if the open space that will be created by demolishing the two old High Schools will only be vacant temporarily.

The Hospital wants the QE site, and already has hired a firm to design a building there. The St. Pat's site can still be redeveloped to effect some transportation improvements, though, and that is where the remaining hope lies.
